Movin’ Out is holding an online program on financial literacy. The six sessions will equip individuals and households with low-incomes on the Southside of Madison with knowledge and skills to manage their finances.

The program covers a range of financial topics including: financial goals and money mindset, budgeting, savings, credit scores, debt management, insurance, and estate planning.

 

Session 1: Financial Goals & Money Mindset

March 28th - 7:00pm to 8:30pm 

Having financial goals is important. In this session, we will cover your “WHY” for changing your current financial state. We will discuss your goals and your relationship with money and how to shift from a scarcity mindset to a money mindset.

Session 2: Budgeting 

May 16th - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Budgeting is an important step to achieving financial security. In this session we will discuss how to make a spending plan, and how to reach short-term goals (emergency savings), mid-term goals (saving for a down payment on a house), and long-term goals (retirement and education savings).

Session 3: Savings 

July 18th - 7:00pm to 8:30pm 

In this session we will discuss the importance of savings, how to reach savings goals, and ways to cut expenses to increase your savings rate.

Session 4: Credit Scores

September 19, 2023 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm 

This session provides an overview of credit reports and scores. In this session we will discuss building credit, repairing credit, and improving credit.

Session 5: Debt Management 

November 14, 2023 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm 

Having debt can be debilitating. This session will help you tackle your debt head on with strategies to develop a plan to pay off your debt.

Session 6: Insurance & Estate Planning 

December 12, 2023 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm 

This session will cover some of the most important types of insurance needed to protect you and your family.

How much does this program cost?

  • All sessions are free!

Do I need to attend every session? 

  • The series is intended to be attended in full to build on financial knowledge. If you are unable to attend a date due to a scheduling conflict a recording will be available and sent to registered participants after the session is completed.

Will sessions be recorded if I am unable to attend when it is live? 

  • Yes, all participants registered for the session will receive a recording after the session is completed. 

Who is leading each session?

  • This series is created by Movin’ Out, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit with a mission to advance disability justice by co-creating safe, affordable, community-integrated homes.

  • These sessions are hosted by Movin’ Out’s housing counseling team. 

What if I am looking for one-on-one individualized help? 

  • We invite you to join these sessions to learn more about financial topics, there will be opportunities to ask the presenters questions. If you are looking for homebuyer assistance, please fill out this contact form and a housing counselor will reach out to you to schedule an in-person, phone, or video call counseling session.

  • Scheduled in-person counseling sessions will be offered at the Goodman South Public Library by appointment. Please use the contact form linked above or call our intake line (608) 251-4446 ext. 7 to schedule an in-person session.

What if I am not a resident of Madison’s Southside? 

  • This series is targeted to households on the Southside, but people in other areas are still able to register and participate.

Where are these sessions taking place? 

  • All sessions are held online over Zoom.
