How we began

In 1992, a group of parents got together to address a common concern. Rather than relying on group homes or other institutional facilities that cluster people with disabilities, they wanted their young adult children with disabilities to move into their own homes, preferably homes the young men and women could own. Finding no organization prepared to assist them, these parents decided to achieve their goal on their own. Movin’ Out was born just a few years later.

Our impact

What does home mean to you? For many of us, home is where friends and family gather, eat, laugh, and make special memories. It's knowing our neighbors and being part of a community. But most of all, it’s a foundation for success – a place of safety and comfort where we can rest and recharge so we can take on whatever comes our way.

This foundation is even more important for people with permanent disabilities and their families. Unfortunately, they often face significant challenges, whether it’s moving out of a parents’ home for the first time, finding a high quality, accessible, affordable rental, or becoming a home owner.

At Movin’ Out we believe that everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to live and thrive. We understand that housing is the key to living a better, healthier, and more stable life. When housing works well, everything else in life can be a little easier — work, education, healthcare, transportation. It can all add up to improved well-being and thriving communities.

We're dedicated to creating more inclusive affordable housing options that are embedded within neighborhoods where our clients are truly a part of the community. We do not work on projects that in any way cluster people with disabilities.

We provide a range of safe, affordable, community-integrated housing solutions to adults with disabilities and to families that include children with disabilities.

  • We’ve helped over 2,000 families across Wisconsin to become first-time home buyers or to rehab their homes for safety or accessibility modifications.

  • We have helped create over 1,500 units of affordable rental housing throughout the state. Over 350 of those are supportive units.
